ΔΙΟΣ ΤΑΦΟΣ (ΑΓΓΛΙΚΑ)

Twenty-four centuries ago, during the third and fourth centuriew before the birth of Christ, writers of ancient Greece and scholars of the church reported the existence of a publicly exhibited place, which wae considered to be the 'tomb of Zeus'. The sources are numerous and persistent, with a gap of five centuries, from the 5th-10th centuriesof the first millennium after Christ. Pashley, a reliable and learnedtraveler, notes in 1834: 'The testimony of a long line of ancient writers and scholars of the church fully and clearly proves that the tomb was an object of curiosity for foreigners and of worship for Cretans, from the very distant past until after Constantine the Great { of Byzantium}'. The claim made by Cretans that there existed such a place, which was publicized and consideres to be the 'tomb of Zeus', generated the saying 'Cretans are forever liars'.
